E-flite Micro/Mini Pitch Gauge for Small Helicopters

E-flite Micro/Mini Pitch Gauge for Small Helicopters @ Hobby-Estore.com
Heli pilots find out that one thing is very important when setting up their micro/mini helicopters: that is setting main rotor blade pitch. You don’t want too much pitch (too much load), but you do need enough pitch to fly properly. E-flite has introduced an easy-to-use and inexpensive pitch gauge to solve the problem easily. The E-flite Micro/Mini Helicopter Pitch Gauge takes all the guesswork out of getting it right. Take a close look and follow along as we describe the recommended steps to to follow for your setup:

a. Very Important! Disconnect the main and tail rotor (if applicable) motors before proceeding with the pitch setup.
b. Turn on the radio, power on the helicopter and move the transmitter’s throttle/collective stick to the center/mid position while holding the flybar level (relative to the tail boom). Then, adjust the main rotor blade pitch (by adjusting the linkages) so that the pitch gauge indicates 0 degrees on both blades. Make sure to take the reading with the top surface of the pitch gauge aligned and parallel with the flybar. And again, the flybar MUST be level (parallel) to the tail boom in order for the reading to be accurate and correct.
c. Perform the same operation with the collective stick at both the maximum and minimum positions. Adjust the pitch to the manual’s recommended setting or to your own personal preferences. A typical “Normal Flight Mode” setup will use a pitch range from approximately negative 3–5 degrees (low collective) to a maximum collective positive pitch of 9 to 11 degrees. A typical “Idle Up” or “Stunt Flight Mode” setup will have a pitch range of approximately negative 9 to 11 degrees (low collective) to positive 9 to11 degrees (high collective).

After you make these adjustments you can go back and connect the motors so the model is ready to fly. Your heli should have the pitch settings required for flight, but you might want to fine-tune the settings per your personal preference and for the specific maneuvers you perform that may require different pitch settings (i.e. – more positive pitch for auto-rotations). Also, helicopter radios provide a programable “pitch curve” which can enable the pilot to further enhance the flight performance of their model. The E-flite Micro/Mini Pitch Gauge makes it easy to check the setup at any time with no special tools or procedures. Now you have it under control.

E-flite Blade CX Helicopter

E-flite Blade CX Helicopter @ Hobby-Estore.com
The E-flite Blade CX is an entry level, ready-to-fly electric micro R/C helicopter designed and distributed by E-flite, a division of Horizon Hobby of Champaign, Illinois, USA.

This model was introduced in late 2005 as an easier-to-fly alternative to E-flite's Blade CP, also introduced in 2005. Unlike its predecessor, intended for experienced pilots with its standard two-blade main rotor and gyro-controlled tail rotor, the CX is fitted with a coaxial counter-rotating main head. This system, driven by two 180-series motors, cancels the rotational torque that makes a standard helicopter difficult to learn to hover, especially a helicopter the size of the CP. The CX, by comparison, is stable enough so that inexperienced R/C users can learn to hover relatively quickly, some learning almost immediately. Turning, or more correctly yaw, is accomplished via the slowing of one blade or the other without affecting stability. Compared to a single rotor helicopter, the improved stability is at the expense of a tradeoff in control responsiveness, but one can theoretically step up to the CP or other standard micro helicopter once the basics of helicopter flight are mastered with the CX.

A sophisticated four-in-one onboard control unit similar to the one found on the CP contains a radio receiver, gyro and two motor controls. Like the CP, each E-flite Blade CX is individually test-flown at the factory prior to shipping. A lithium polymer battery with DC charger is standard as is an instructional DVD. The other requirement is eight "AA" batteries for the transmitter.

Options include a police helicopter fuselage, training skids, and upgrades for various parts of the helicopter that are generally stronger or perform better than the original.

The Blade Cx2 is a new version of the Blade Cx. The gyro has been updated with new software to make it easier to fly, there are minor chassis changes, a new body has been put on with a military-themed body and dummy missiles as separately available options, and a synthesized radio system made by Spektrum replaces the original. Parts are otherwise compatible with the original.

You can fly the E-flite Blade CX2 with the Spektrum DX7

You can fly the E-flite Blade CX2 with the Spektrum DX7 @ Hobby-Estore.com
The new E-flite Blade CX2 micro coaxial helicopter, with built-in 2.4ghz Spektrum technology, has been a big hit with RC pilots everywhere. Many people have been introduced to RC with this great little flying machine, and many experienced RC pilots have purchased the Blade CX2 as well. Many RC pilots have also joined the Spektrum wave by purchasing the newly released Spektrum DX7 to fly their larger outdoor models. So a natural question that comes up is, “Can I fly my Blade CX2 with the DX7 transmitter?”. The answer is “Yes,” and here is how to do it. Nothing special is required, except for your Blade CX2 and Spektrum DX7 transmitter.

If you have flown your Blade CX2, then you know that it flies indoors very nicely. This is a great way to get some flight time even when it is cold and windy outside. If you are new to RC, then in this initial flying process you will learn the basics of flying an RC helicopter. As you become more proficient, you might also want to make some minor adjustments to increase the control response.

If you have flown other coaxial electric helicopters, you will note immediately that the CX2 offers more performance potential than most others. Forward and backward flight is more controllable as the tail control and holding power is considerably enhanced when compared to others.

Now let's put the DX7 transmitter in control of your CX2. Because the DX7 offers more features than the transmitter included with the helicopter, you will have sub trims that allow for fine-tuning the center of all flight controls, as well as travel, dual rate and exponential adjustments for all the controls.

Here are the simple steps to completing the setup of the DX7 for your Blade CX2. Although it may look like a lot of steps, the following should only take a few minutes.

1. Select a new model in your DX7 model memory.
2. Perform the normal binding process (outlined in the transmitter and helicopter manuals) to bind the receiver of the Blade CX2 4-in-1 to your DX7 transmitter.
3. Set the model type to ACRO. Although standard HELI programming will also work (i.e. – non CCPM), its much easier to use a simple ACRO setup.
4. Make sure that all Wing Types are set to off (this is the default in a new model setup).
5. Enter the function list menu in your DX7 TX and set the servo reversing switches for aileron, elevator, and rudder to the reverse direction. For the time being leave all of the subtrim values at "0".
6. In the servo travel adjustment menu you can adjust the aileron, elevator and rudder travel up to 150%. A higher travel value will result in more overall control response. Beginners should use approximately 100% travel and advanced pilots can set the travel up to 150% for added responsiveness.

Ok, surprise! You have completed the basic setup. You are ready to power up the helicopter and lift off into a hover. When powering up the helicopter, do note that it may be necessary to lower the throttle trim all the way to get the 4-in-1 to arm properly.

Once in hover, you will probably find that the helicopter needs some minor trimming which you can easily do with the trim levers on the TX, or you can make adjustments in the sub trim menu. Once you are satisfied, you are finished with the trimming process.

Your helicopter is now ready to fly and for additional fine tuning, if you choose. You can use the DX7 transmitter to set the dual rates for the aileron, elevator and rudder functions to offer low and high response rates for the controls. You may also want to try adding some positive exponential to any of the three main control functions in order to make the helicopter less responsive around stick center, while retaining additional control response from any increases in the travel adjustments you have made.

Have fun—you have completed the Blade CX2 setup and can begin to enjoy the enhanced tuning options that the Spektrum DX7 transmitter can provide when flying your helicopter.

I hope we have been able to help you have fun with your new adventure—it should give you hours of enjoyment.
